Levittown
Historical Society
MUSEUM
TOUR |
Just as
New York City serves as an icon for urban living in America, Levittown, NY is
the absolute symbol of modern day suburbia. For this reason alone, anyone who
ever lived here, worked here, or studied the cultural impact of this post-WWII
development should make time to visit the Levittown Historical Museum.
Opened in 1997 as part of Levittown's 50th anniversary
celebration, the museum houses a breathtaking collection of memorabilia, photographs,
furnishings, and appliances from original Levitt homes. A walk
through this simulated Levitt residence offers an engaging glimpse of Levittown's history, beginning
with recollections, photographs, and personal belongings of the first World War II
veterans to return to Long Island in search of affordable housing.
As you continue your
tour, you'll be transported back in time as you visit several rooms complete
with original furniture, appliances, and fixtures dating back to Levitt
homes of the late 1940s and early 1950s. And what Levittown historical
collection would be complete without a tribute to William Levitt, the developer
who envisioned it all and made Levittown a reality.

Since
opening in 1997, The
Levittown Historical Museum, located on the lower level of the Levittown
Memorial Education Center, has welcomed more than 3000 visitors from our local
area and from across the United States. Admission is free and guided tours are available
by appointment.
To
reach the Levittown Historical Museum, take Hempstead Turnpike to Gardiners
Avenue (K-Mart on corner) and go south (left if you're coming from the east,
right if you're coming from the west) approximately 1/4 mile to Reed Lane.
Make a left on Reed Lane. At the end of Reed Lane, turn right onto Abbey
Lane. The Levittown Memorial Education Center is on the right. Go
past the center and turn right into the parking lot. The museum, located
on the lower level, can be accessed through the middle door off this parking
lot. For more information, please call
516-735-9060. And to help support the mission of the Levittown Historical
Society, please visit our online Levittown
